Gary Bishop - UKCP Registered Psychotherapist
I have several years of experience working with individuals, couples and groups, in the charity sector and as part of a multi-disciplinary mental health team in the NHS.
I have worked with a broad range of presentations, including bereavement, anxiety, depression, work related stress, relationship issues, anger and self-harm.
I currently work in private practice and also as a Psychotherapist in The NHS where I work with clients with complex mental health needs.
How I work
My way of working as a counsellor and psychotherapist is integrative, which means that I will adapt my approach to best suit your needs and will include elements of Transactional Analysis, Relational TA, CBT and Psychodynamic approaches. I have a particular interest in 'Relational' counselling and psychotherapy; a way of exploring difficult, repetitive inter-personal experiences and options for change.
My way of thinking is that we are profoundly influenced by the environment in which we grew up, socially, culturally and with-in our family units. These past patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour can limit how we feel about ourselves in the present, resulting in overwhelming feelings, irrational thoughts and destructive behaviour.
It can take a lot of energy to live with troubling thoughts, feelings or relationships. This can often leave people feeling "empty" or "helpless". Talking with a professional counsellor or therapist can aid understanding more deeply your historical patterns and begin to express more fully your thoughts and emotions. This can help free up that energy and help you begin to live your life more fully in the present.
I also work with couples who are experiencing difficulties in their relationships, providing a safe space where difficult thoughts and feelings can be talked about and explored. This can lead to a greater understanding of what might be impeding upon intimacy in your relationship, giving you the opportunity to make positive change for a more fulfilling way of being.
